Position Summary
Reporting to the Executive Director and Chief Curator, the Associate Director, Programs possesses a thorough understanding of the key institutional aspects of the CCA. She/he provides scholarly and strategic leadership to the activities of the CCA Programs Division, in order to continuously develop and promote CCA projects, exhibitions, publications, as well as public and online activities as catalysts for original inquiry.
The Associate Director, Programs works with the Executive Director and Chief Curator, as well as senior management to define institution-wide policies, goals and priorities for the CCA. She/he develops and maintains relations with individuals, institutions and organizations that can support or partner the CCA in its mission.
Based on the CCA’s vision, in consultation and collaboration with the Executive Director and Chief Curator, with the Associate Director, Collection and with the Associate Director, Study Centre, she/he helps to develop projects that stimulate and broaden participation, and that explore key aspects of architecture and contemporary issues affecting the built environment.
Major Responsibilities
The Associate Director, Programs is responsible for the development, organization and management of multidisciplinary projects including exhibitions, publications, and online projects (in relation to the content of CCA programs), as well as public and educational programs. She/he is responsible for developing the editorial and curatorial content of programs in line with the CCA’s vision, as well as managing the programs division.
Strategic and Management Duties
• Direct and oversee the implementation of the CCA’s curatorial vision in all the activities of the Programs Division, including exhibitions, publications, and cultural and educational programs;
• Develop long-term strategies for the effective implementation of institutional programs, including policies, budgets, action plans, and schedules;
• Establish procedures for the development and production phases of all projects;
• Approve and supervise the content and each step in project development and production;
• Negotiate the institution’s partnership contracts with other institutions and organizations, and maintain and extend a network of contacts with prospective partners;
• Participate in the promotion and outside presentation of CCA projects;
• In collaboration with the Development Division, coordinate Programs fundraising and develop, cultivate and maintain relations with donors.
Curatorial Activities
• Collaborate with the Executive Director and Chief Curator to shape and develop curatorial and editorial strategies for the CCA;
• Propose topics for new research in line with the CCA vision;
• Contribute to the development of policies and initiatives linked to curatorial issues;
• Develop and prepare exhibitions with the curatorial team and with guest curators;
• Develop, and interpret exhibitions with researchers, students, visitors and professors;
• Research and propose new ways or processes to ensure innovative and updated thinking in framing CCA programs or projects;
• Contribute to the editorial content of the CCA website;
• Work with the Associate Director, Collection in order to present material from the CCA Collection to the public;
• Recommend the acquisition of material in collaboration with the Collection Division.
Programs Division Management
• Set the Programs Division’s objectives and priorities;
• Supervise Programs Division staff;
• Prepare and manage the entire division’s budgets for exhibitions, publications, public activities and online projects;
• Contribute to the cooperation of the Programs Division with the CCA’s other Divisions;
• Work in close collaboration with the Associate Director, Collection, the Chief, Collection and Program Services and the Associate Director, Study Centre in order to ensure the full integration of all CCA programs;
• Work in close collaboration with the Associate Director, Communications in order to promote, and diffuse the content of, CCA Programs activities in all media (online, print, newspapers, etc.)
• Work with the Associate Director, Development in order to identify potential financial support and donations for Programs;
• Contribute to the development and implementation of policies set by the management committee;
• Represent the CCA locally and internationally at events and meetings, when necessary.
Qualifications
• Master’s degree in architecture or related discipline, or architectural history, art history, or museology;
• 5 to 7 years experience, with curatorial duties;
• Ability to work in English and French with advanced writing skills in one of them;
• Knowledge of architecture and its related disciplines;
• Communication, team working, technical expertise, result oriented, ability to adapt, innovation, leadership;
• Project Management skills;
• Experience in project coordination or management for cultural institutions, with an emphasis on architectural or urban issues;
• Experience in curatorial practice;
• Have an international network of contacts;
• Experience in specialized architectural publishing;
• Experience in design related to exhibitions;
• Excellent sense of organization and planning;
• A great facility for managing interpersonal relationships.

The Museum’s Education Centre, launched in 2009, performs a fundamental key role within the Museum, developing and delivering active and ambitious educational courses and events for all the Museum’s audiences, from schoolchildren to adults and specialists, from practical art courses to historical lecture series.
The MIA Library: The library of the Museum of Islamic Art is a major facility with the Museum’s Education Centre, serving both the public and staff. It has an important and growing collection of books, including historic material and special collections, with a dedicated special-collections reading-room as well as general-reader facilities including AV cubicles and carrels. The library is non-lending, but caters to drop-in readers of all kinds and levels, from advanced scholars to school-children. Readers come from a wide range of different backgrounds and countries. Cataloguing and other information services are provided in English and Arabic.
The Library’s subject area is focused on the history of Islamic art; with supplementary material in the history of Islamic culture, in non-Islamic arts and in general reference works. All European and Middle Eastern languages are covered. There is the ambition to offer and develop online and electronic resources. There is a significant annual budget for collections acquisition and development of services.
The Library is in the process of implementing the SirsiDynix Symphony application, and is using LC Classifications
The Museum is now seeking a Chief Librarian to establish the Library and its activities at the forefront of international practice.
The Chief Librarian reports to the Deputy Director (Education), and is responsible for the development, implementation and monitoring of the Library’s strategy, policy and operations.

- Minimum 10 years experience developing and managing programs for start-up organizations
- Understanding of program design and implementation issues preferred
- Strong commitment to QMA and AMOMA vision and values
- Sound knowledge of and exposure to a range of technologies
- Able to identify issues and to use sound judgment in applying expertise and experience to resolve a wide range of problems
- Excellent English communications (spoken and written) skills and practices, including the ability to draft/edit a variety of written reports and communications and to articulate ideas in a confident, clear and concise style and to communicate effectively via electronic methods such as email and video conferencing. Arabic skills are an added benefit.
- Very good interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain effective partnerships and working relations in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
- Must have the ability to plan work, manage conflicting priorities and work under pressure of tight and conflicting deadlines. Ability to facilitate meetings and workshops.

The Museum of Islamic Art, Doha – Qatar, opened to great acclaim in December 2008. The spectacular building by I. M. Pei houses one of the world’s most distinguished and important collections of Islamic art ranging from Spain to Central Asia and India, dating from the 7th to the 19th centuries, and encompassing arts of all kinds. Particularly important are the collections of early Qurans and other manuscripts, inlaid metalwork, carpets and textiles.
The Museum is now seeking a Chief Curator to head the Curatorial Department within the Collections Division. The Curatorial Department is responsible for the research and expertise required for the documentation of the collections, and for the development of displays and exhibitions, publications, lectures and other educational activities.
The post is full-time, based in Doha, and attracts a competitive salary and benefits package.
The Chief Curator reports to Deputy Director (Collections) and is responsible for the work of the Curators and Curatorial Assistants within the Department.
Responsibilities include:
- Work with Deputy Director (Collections) to develop and implement policies and practices within the curatorial department to support the aims and goals of the MIA
- Recruitment, management, training and development of the staff in the curatorial department
- Development of research, publication and exhibition programs
- Working with the Registrar to ensure the production and development of highest quality of cataloguing and research information
- Planning of functionality and content of the collections areas of the MIA web site
- Advise where required on all museological matters relevant to the collections, including collection development and management
- Review of current staff to identify skill gaps, training needs and organizational requirements
- Review of current MIA programs and distribution of responsibilities of curatorial department staff
- With the Registrar, development and implementation of cataloguing standards
- Development and implementation of cataloguing program as agreed with Deputy Director Collections
- Overall management of the agreed program of work of the curatorial department.
Requirements
- Post Graduate Degree in a relevant subject
- 5 years experience at curatorial level
- 3 years experience of staff management
- Expert knowledge of one area of the museums collections
- Knowledge of Arabic, Persian or Turkish and relevant European languages
- Record of publication, exhibition and displays, and lecturing
- Experience of staff management, recruitment and training
- Ability and willingness to work as part of a team, and contribute to the formation of policy and strategy for the museum and organization as a whole
- Leadership and drive to create and inspire individuals and teamwork within the group
- Vision and energy to develop the group to perform at the highest international standards
- Experience of working in the Middle East an advantage

Information Management Officer
The United Nations is looking to recruit an Information Management Officer (temporary until 31 December 2011). The post is located in the Department of Management (DM), Office of Central Support Services (OCSS), Archives and Records Management Section (ARMS). The successful candidate will report to the Chief of Section, with additional supervisors from designees at the UN International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (UN-ICTR) and UN International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (UN-ICTY) and will be responsible for providing records and archives management support, both remotely from New York and on-site, to both Tribunals as they prepare for end of mandate. The closing date for applications is 17 September 2010 and the appointment will be at the P4 level.
