Welcome to my web site. I am a New Zealand novelist and short
story writer. I was born in New Zealand. In 1992, my novel The Word Burners was
awarded the Commonwealth Writers Prize for the best first book in South Asia and the
South Pacific. I have since published three more novels, The Iron Mouth (1993)
The Silicon Tongue (1996) and The Bloodwood Clan (1999). In 2003, I published
my first volume of memoir, The House at Karamu.
Two of my novels have been translated into German, and one into Korean. See the books index for more details.
In 1994, I was chosen to represent New Zealand at the International Writing Program at
the University of Iowa, USA. I have been the recipient of four project grants from
Creative New Zealand. In 1999, I was appointed as Writer in Residence at The University of
Waikato, New Zealand. In 2005, I was awarded a place at Ledig
House International Writers Colony. In 2006, I became Writer in Residence at the
historic Randell Cottage in Wellington, New
Zealand.
